I spoke with Austin about his experience using public assistance and what he would like to see in his future. Here are his thoughts.
What do you believe would help people in poverty overcome economic challenges?
“People in Poverty need more resources, especially people like myself with high functioning autism. I want to unlock my full potential because I have so much to offer the world, I just need to find my niche.”
What do you think of the stereotypes people have against those who use safety net programs?
“People may think you “have it all”, but it’s not easy living on public assistance, it’s always a struggle.”
What do you see for yourself in the future?
“I’d like to get to a place where I no longer depend on public assistance – that’s the goal. I think going back to school could help. But, I need to find the school with the right accommodations for me. I hope that day will come.”
